In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a brilliant post from Kate Hart, analyzing young adult book cover trends for 2011. She must have put a lot of time and passion into this work, and the results are fascinating. Artful in their own right.
Thank you, Kate, for the work you put into creating these analytics and for sharing them with the world. Beautiful work.
Did you catch the interview at Digital Book World with Smashwords CEO, Mark Coker? Coker discusses how, to be successful, indie authors need to be not just great writers, but great publishers as well. One part of the interview in particular caught my attention. When discussing the success of certain titles and what to do when you know you’ve written a great book, Coker says:
“I imagine a book is an object and attached to the object you have dials and levers and things you can tweak and turn and twist, things that can increase the availability, discoverability, accessibility, enjoyability to readers.”
When asked to go into detail on what is on those dials, i.e., what gives a book virality, Coker lists three things:
- Book description
- Cover art
Cover art, he says, is “the first impression you make to an e-book buyer. A good cover image makes a promise to a reader: This is the book you’re looking for. If the cover image doesn’t make the right promise, it limits your virality.“
Your cover art matters. Don’t just take my word for it. This guy knows what he’s talking about.
